Mary was born and grew up in Scotland where she completed grade and high school education, followed by medical school at Aberdeen University in 1972. She continued her post-graduate education at Ottawa University, completing her psychiatric residency in 1977. Since then she has worked as a general adult psychiatrist with interests in hospital-based treatment and teaching. Mary held an appointment as assistant professor at Ottawa University, administration, served terms as chief of emergency psychiatry and president of medical staff at the Royal Ottawa Hospital, and president of the psychiatric section of the Ottawa Academy of Medicine. Following that Mary worked at the Queensway Carleton Hospital initially as the chief of psychiatry and then as Chief of Staff from 2002 to 2008, retiring in 2013.
